A few days I came across a post via Facebook … 40 Bags in 40 Days 2015 Decluttering Challenge posted by White House Black Shutters. I was intrigued! Decluttering your life? I love it … sign me up! I love the idea of order – a place for everything and everything in its place. I have sporadic moments of filling the odd bag or two to give to charity, but this it what I need – a set timeframe with a clear goal at the end. So, I’m signing up for the challenge … declutering my life one bag at a time over the next 40 days. Wish me luck! (or even better join me). I’ll share my progress and lay bare my mess (please be kind…).
When does it start?
The challenge officially starts on Wednesday 18th February and goes through to Saturday 4th April (you get Sundays as a day of rest). I shared the news that I joining the challenge to my husband Paul last night who is supportive, although he’s initial reaction was … Dear God – I’m scared!
What do you need?
Full details of the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge are found here. Please pop over to the official 40 Bags in 40 Days 2015 Decluttering Challenge page which has everything you’ll need to know, including extra support and motivation via instagram #40bagsin40days or facebook group.
My Main challenge goals
My main areas of focus for this challenge and the reasons for joining up are:
1. The Garage – an over-all dumping ground for unused furniture, old toys and Paul’s workshop … perhaps this explains Paul’s reaction.
2. Miss E’s bedroom – overflowing toy boxes and a wardrobe full of clothes that probably don’t fit anymore.
3. Spare room/home office – brimming with craft supplies, spare clothes and paperwork … needs serious attention.
Day 0 – Tuesday 17 February…
I’ve completed my declutter plan which felt good. By breaking the house down room by room (or draw by draw) I feel confident that I can achieve a bag a day … it’s only 10-20 mins a day right? I can find the time.
As Wednesday’s are my day off work, I have dedicated these to the more daunting tasks such as Miss E’s bedroom, wardrobes etc. Saturday’s I have dedicated to tackling one area of the garage (with a little help from Paul).
Day 1 – Wednesday 18 Februay…
Off to a flying start, I tacked Miss E’s chest-of-draws on my first day of decluttering.
I had a clean out of all the clothes that don’t get worn, are falling apart or are too small. I filled 3 bags:
- Thrown out
- Donated to charity
- Hand-me down to a dear friend’s little girl … Miss A
Feeling good – Day One done! Only 39 more to go … wish me luck. I’ll check back in next week for progress update. I’ll post daily updated on my instagram #40bagsin40days

Decrapifying might just be my favorite word ever! I’ll be finding ways to use that over the next while.
I’m a minimalist, so I’m always throwing things out. And I do a big spring gutting of my house, and sometimes a fall one. Even with all of this, it’s tough to stay ahead of everything that comes in. The one I still haven’t tackled after all these years is papers, especially the mail. But I’m working on it.
Best wishes in your challenge! I’ll try to remember to stop by. And happy Sharefest!
