I think one of my favourite things to do on my day off must be rummaging through the local thrift shop. With Miss E at school and Paul at work, there’s no one to distract me from my mid-week bargain hunt! A few weeks ago at my favourite thrift shop, I spied a free standing wooden towel rack. It was in the style of an old-fashion towel rack, like one you might find in a bathroom or a clothes horse for the bedroom. I was so pleased with how my shabby step stool turned out, I wondered if this towel rack might also work in the bathroom. If not, I could always use it in the bedroom. Either way, I managed to get this little beauty home with me on the bus. Now to shabby it up!
I’m not sure if you can see just how glossy and brown the towel rack really was, but the above “before” photo gives you some idea. The shape was great and I could see lots potential underneath the shiny exterior, but the brown lacquer had to go!
I decided the stay with the shabby look and choose Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. As I was using chalk paint, I only gave the towel rack a wipe down with a mixture of water and grime remover (I like to use Sugar Soap). This will remove any last traces of dirt or grease and ensure the paint will adhere to the surface properly. I didn’t worry about sanding and went straight to painting. I gave the piece two (2) coats of ASCP.
After the final coat, I allowed the towel rack to dry for about 24 hours. Using a fine grade sandpaper (about 120 grit) I distressed the piece quite heavily, concentrating on the corners and edges. I finished with a coat of Annie Sloan clear soft wax.
As you see, in the end the towel rack ended up at the foot of my bed, so I guess it has become more of a clothes horse. I tried it in the bathroom, but it was a wee bit small for our towels, which ended up draped on the floor … or are towels just larger now? I’m loving how it looks at the end of our bed, although the search still continues for the perfect towel rack for the bathroom!
Perfect for holding spare thrown rugs … especially handy now the seasons are changing and sometimes you need a little extra warmth at night.
